The charred remains of a professional poker player have been discovered in a remote, Michigan parking lot, Susie Zhao, 33, was described as a 'national talent' on the competitive poker circuit, where she was known as 'Susie Q' and would easily take home prizes of tens of thousands of dollars. She is believed to have won $224,671 over her career. She had lived in between Los Angeles and Las Vegas but friends told WXYZ she had recently moved back to live with her parents in Michigan to 'confront challenges in her personal life'. Zhao was last seen by her mother on July 12 at around 5.30pm. Her badly burned body was found by a local resident in the wooded area at 8:30am on July 13 in a parking lot near the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, on the outskirts of Detroit, according to the White Lake Township Police Department. Police believe it is likely she died some time after 11:45pm the previous night, and believe her high stakes job could be a motive. They are also investigating whether her killer maybe somebody she met locally and recently. 'You have to determine whether or not this is a coverup, or this may be some sort of retaliatory incident because of her profession,' said Detective Chris Hild, White Lake Township Police. Wisconsin woman arrested for setting ex-boyfriend’s car on fire

A Wisconsin woman was arrested for taking the law into her own hands after she caught her ex-boyfriend with another woman. Kelly S. Hayes, of Madison, is accused of smashing out the windows of a car owned by her ex-boyfriend, then pouring an accelerant inside the car and setting it on fire. The arson incident happened on the South Side on Tuesday, police say. The crime of passion was caught on cellphone video and uploaded to Facebook. Police and fire crews responded to an apartment complex on the 2000 block of Greenway Cross around 5 p.m. The car, a Chevy Impala, was already engulfed in flames by the time fire crews arrived to put out the blaze. A witness told police that a woman armed with a baseball bat broke out the windows on the car before dousing the car with gas and setting it on fire. Cell phone video shows a woman wearing a black hoodie, face mask and gloves setting the car on fire. A small explosion knocked the women to the ground before she grabbed a red gas can and ran off. Another witness got the license plate number of the car the scorned woman drove off in. Police ran the license plate and linked it to Hayes, 34, who had a past relationship with the unidentified car owner, police say. Hayes was arrested and charged with suspicion of arson and criminal damage to property. She showed no remorse for her crime in her smiling mugshot. The car is a total loss, police said. Source

A dresser in the room contained a prescription for generic Ambien with one pill broken in half; the section that says who the prescription was made out to was blacked out prior to publication. The officer also wrote that there was a glass of Corona less than half full, as well as an empty bottle of Stella Artois. Also present was a journal with a biography that was handwritten but not dated. There was no suicide note.  Source

When stealing from Walmart in broad daylight, it is best to work your way up to the 65” Ultra HD television. Florida cops are seeking to identify the woman who Sunday afternoon tried to push a shopping cart containing the massive TV out of a store in Mulberry, a town 40 miles east of Tampa. According to police, the suspect, accompanied by a female cohort, placed assorted electronics items into her cart before adding the 65” Philips TV, which sat precariously in the cart. When the woman bypassed the checkout lines and headed for the door, Walmart security stopped her and asked to see a receipt for the items in her cart. A volunteer questioned by French police in connection with the fire at Nantes Cathedral has been released without charge. The 39-year-old Rwandan refugee was detained following the July 18 fire at the Gothic cathedral which police suspect was caused by arson. He was freed Sunday evening, according the Nantes public prosecutor. The BBC reported that the man, who has not been named, was responsible for locking the cathedral the day before the fire. He was detained on Saturday and questioned by police in order to clear up alleged inconsistencies in his schedule. Nantes prosecutor Pierre Sennes told Reuters: “He is not implicated. The inconsistencies that came up have been clarified.” Le Figaro quoted Jean-Charles Nowak, a clerk at the cathedral, as saying that the volunteer was “a man of duty” who had “suffered a lot in Rwanda.” “I don’t believe for a second that he could have set the cathedral on fire. It’s a place he adores,” Nowak told the French newspaper. Firefighters were called to Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul cathedral, which dates from the 15th century, on Saturday morning to tackle a blaze which destroyed a historic organ and stained-glass windows. Beverly Grove man charged with lying to get $9 million in COVID-19 relief loans, blowing money in Vegas

A Beverly Grove man was arrested Thursday morning to face federal charges alleging he used fraud to secure some $9 million in loans meant to help keep small businesses afloat during the pandemic, then squandered some of the money in Las Vegas, officials said.

The amount of relief money 40-year-old Andrew Marnell is accused of fraudulently obtaining may rise as the investigation continues, as authorities have already discovered the scheme ran deeper than they initially thought, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles said in a news release.

Marnell faces one count of bank fraud, prosecutors said.

Officials say he applied for loans from various banks on behalf of multiple companies after the $659 billion Paycheck Protection Program launched in April. The taxpayer-backed initiative is part of the CARES Act relief package and meant to fund job retention at small businesses.

The applications Marnell submitted allegedly included many false and misleading statements about the operations and expenses of the companies he applied on behalf of. The defendant also used fake names and documents to support the claims, authorities said.

When he secured the funding, Marnell allegedly transferred millions into his stock trading accounts and made risky market bets. He also blew hundreds of thousands of dollars in Las Vegas, including at the Bellagio, as recently as last week, according to prosecutors.

Marnell could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on the charges.

The defendant made his initial appearance in a federal courtroom in downtown L.A. Thursday afternoon and was held without bail pending a hearing on Tuesday, officials said. Source

Colorado town threatens a year in jail for residents who refuse to wear masks

The city of Englewood, Colorado, just south of Denver, is requiring all of its residents to wear face masks amid a spike in coronavirus cases — and violators could face up to a year behind bars, coupled with a hefty fine.

The emergency order, issued by City Manager J. Shawn Lewis and approved by the city council Monday, went into effect Thursday. It states that everyone over the age of 6 will be required to wear a mask while outside their homes.

Face masks must be worn inside any retail or commercial business, governmental office, or health care facility, including veterinary offices, officials say.

They must also be worn while waiting for or riding on public transportation, as well as inside taxis or other ride-sharing vehicles.

Face masks are not required inside personal offices as long as co-workers are working at least six feet away and there are no clients or customers in the room.
First offenders will be ticketed with a $15 fine, and second and subsequent offenders will have to shell out $25.

However, the order states that the maximum penalty is a fine of up to $2,650, 360 days behind bars or both.

“Any person charged with an offense under this Emergency Order may choose to enter a plea of not guilty and be entitled to a trial as authorized by the law,” the order states. Source

N.S. woman faces charges after video of dog being mistreated circulates online

HALIFAX -- A woman is facing charges after a video that shows a dog being mistreated during a road-rage incident on Canada Day circulated online. Halifax Regional Police responded to an altercation between a group of women in two vehicles in the 600 block of Windmill Road in Dartmouth, N.S., around 5:30 p.m. on July 1. Police say the altercation started when two women in one vehicle confronted two women in another vehicle about being cut off in a drive-thru. Police had received reports that a dog was also involved in the incident, but they weren’t aware of the severity of the actions against the animal. Officers checked on two dogs in one vehicle at the scene and say they appeared to be in good health. Police say the women didn’t want to pursue charges at the time. However, investigators later learned that a video of the incident was circulating on social media, prompting them to launch an investigation. Police say the video shows a dog being swung on its leash by a woman who is not the dog’s owner. Source

1 protester dead, 1 injured after man drives into protesters on I-5 in Seattle

One person was killed and another was seriously injured after a driver plowed into a nightly protest on a closed stretch of Interstate 5 in Seattle early Saturday. Summer Taylor, a 24-year-old from Seattle, died Saturday night at Harborview Medical Center, said Harborview Medical Center spokesperson Susan Gregg. Diaz Love, a 32-year-old from Portland, Oregon, was in serious condition in the intensive-care unit as of Sunday morning.

Washington State Patrol said the driver was Dawit Kelete, 27, of Seattle. He was booked into King County Jail on Saturday morning on investigation of felony vehicular assault. Troopers don’t believe impairment was a factor and said Kelete drove the wrong way on the Stewart Street off-ramp to enter the interstate, which had been partially shut down in response to protesters.

State Patrol announced Saturday evening that it would no longer allow protesters on the interstate.

The change in strategy comes as protests against police brutality and racism enter their second month in Seattle. The hit-and-run was the latest traumatic event to occur at or near protest areas, including shootings near the Capitol Hill Organized Protest, which was shut down by police Wednesday.

“Blocking a freeway is a crime and no longer are we going to enable that criminal conduct to continue,” said State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead, who made the decision to no longer close the interstate. “We are not going to be allowing protesters to access the freeway unimpeded, and there are consequences for criminal conduct.” Source

Video shows woman swinging puppy on leash as a weapon in road rage incident

Police in Canada are investigating an animal cruelty incident after a woman was caught swinging a small dog on a leash as a weapon. Dashcam video captured by a motorist in Dartmouth, Halifax, shows a female driver taking the pet from its owner. She then beats the owner with her own pooch.

The incident occurred on July 1. Police rushed to the scene after hearing reports of an altercation between four women.

“The altercation started after two females in one vehicle confronted two females in the second vehicle,” Halifax police said. One of the cars got cut off in a drive-thru, police said.

At the time of the incident, no one involved wanted to pursue charges, police say. Police were told a dog was involved in the incident but said “the severity of the actions against the dog were not known at the time.”

Witness video, filmed by a motorist waiting behind, shows a woman pulling a dog out of its owner’s vehicle by its leash. When the driver of the car gets out and pursues her, the woman whips the dog at the driver’s head. The two struggle for a few seconds before the driver eventually gets the dog back.

Another video circulating on social media shows the minute the argument began. The two cars are stopped right against each other, a verbal altercation ensues before the two begin exchanging blows.

After learning of the now-viral videos, police launched an investigation into the apparent mistreatment of the dog. Police say the investigation is in the early stages.

Both dogs in one of the vehicles are “in good health,” according to police. Source

2 women hit by car on Seattle highway closed amid protests

SEATTLE (AP) — Two women were struck by a car whose driver sped through a protest-related closure on a freeway in Seattle, authorities said early Saturday.

A 24-year-old woman from Seattle suffered critical, life-threatening injuries and a 32-year-old woman from Bellingham had serious injuries, Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead said.

The driver, a 27-year-old man from Seattle, was in custody, Mead said, adding that impairment was not considered a factor. Charges remain under investigation, as does the motive and point of entry onto the interstate, but Mead said the unnamed man faced multiple felony charges and was suspected to have come on the wrong way on a ramp.

Mead said troopers did not know whether it was a targeted attack.

Video on social media showed a white car traveling at a high rate of speed navigate around two vehicles positioned across the lanes as a barrier. The car careened toward a small crowd of protesters on the freeway, striking two people who flew into the air before landing on the ground.

A nearly two-hour-long Facebook livestream captioned “Black Femme March takes I-5” from Diaz Love ended abruptly; with about 15 seconds left, shouts of “Car!” can be heard as the camera starts to shake before screeching tires and the sound of impact are heard. Harvard grad Claira Janover says she’s lost Deloitte job over TikTok ‘stab threat’ 

The Harvard graduate who said in a TikTok video that she would “stab” anyone who told her “All Lives Matter” revealed in a new pair of recordings that she has lost her job over the perceived threats and ensuing furor.

“Standing up for Black Lives Matter put me in a place online to be seen by millions of people,” a teary Claira Janover said in a new video posted Wednesday afternoon. “The job that I’d worked really hard to get and meant a lot to me has called me and fired me because of everything.”

Janover’s LinkedIn account lists her as an “incoming government and public business service analyst” at Deloitte, a UK-based accounting firm.

During the video, Janover gestured to what appears to be a page from the company’s website, and noted that she was axed “even though they claim to stand against systematic bias, racism and unequal treatment.”

Janover — who graduated from Harvard in May with a degree in government and psychology — went viral after posting a video to the platform railing against people with “the nerve, the sheer entitled Caucasity to say ‘All Lives Matter.’” Source
